IT’LL BE ALL WHYTE ON THE NIGHT

Whisky safari hunt heads to London

By @makingthenews
twitter correspondent

LONDON is set to roar tomorrow night — as the Whyte & Mackay safari hunt nips down south.
After taking Glasgow twitterers by storm last month, the Whyte and Mackay lions will be hiding in London bars, moving from pub to pub until they are caught.
The lions can be found by following clues on Twitter and Google Latitude.
A Whyte & Mackay spokesman told the all tweet journal: “The first four people to ‘catch’ the lions will receive bottles of whisky — including a 19-year-old special edition — while runner-ups will have drinks bought for them.
“Once the lions have been spotted, they will be placed on the bar of each pub — all the person has to do is walk up to them and touch them. They will then receive a bottle of whisky or drink after revealing their Twitter ID.”
The original hunt in Glasgow on March 27 attracted hundreds of followers and comments on Twitter with people from the US and Europe joining in on the fun.
Whyte and Mackay marketing manager Phil McTeer added: “Once again, we’ll send out cryptic tweets about where the lions are, while also updating Google Latitude. Pics and video may also be sent out to add to the clues.
“People not in London can still take part by following the tweets and adding their opinions as to where the lions might be. At its most extreme it could be millions of people searching for two lions. It’s just a bit of fun but it gives people a chance to get a free bottle of whisky or a drink from us.”
The hunt begins on Friday April 3 in an undisclosed London location.

@300MILES TO GET ON THEIR BIKE

Lee and Garry prepare for 300-mile charity trek

By @makingthenews
twitter correspondent

LEE PEYTON and Garry Mackay — aka @300miles — are preparing for 60 hours of hell . . . a 300-mile human powered journey across the Outer Hebrides.
The Edinburgh-based firefighters will cycle, run and kayak from the south of the island chain to the most northerly tip.
Lee told the all tweet journal: “We will complete this in less than 60 hours and, with a bit of pain and effort, raise £25,000 for CLIC Sargent.”
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity providing children and their families with tangible support such as care workers, social workers and Homes from Home accommodation during their treatment.
Lee, pictured right with Garry and some of the kids at CLIC Sargent’s Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick, Ayrshire,  added: “This has been an amazing venture and along the way we’ve met some fantastic people who do a great job for the parents and children affected by cancer and leukaemia. Greg Noble, 13, the ‘face’ of the challenge, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in November 2006.
“He gives blood every four weeks and is now getting a lumbar puncture and chemotherapy direct into his spine every 12 weeks. His courage and humour has been an inspiration.”
The brave duo have received a lot of help along the away from generous sponsors and supporters including @cycleworlduk,  Kari-Tek in Ayrshire,  Colin McWilliams and @mikecoulter. You too can help them reach their £25,000 target by visiting http://www.300miles.org

@BIG PINK HEART DAY

By @makingthenews
twitter correspondent

@alltweetjournal today pledges its support for BigPinkHeart Day — an appeal to launch a calendarised day with a Love Thy Neighbour Theme.
BPH Day is the branchild of @bigpinkheart — aka Sharon Clephane — who, while wanting to promote positive social behaviour on a daily basis, is appealing for a National Day on October 21 each year where the public are urged to go out of their way to help someone less fortunate.
Sharon told the all tweet journal: “BPH Day would be like Valentine’s Day except  we would focus on a MrsDoAsYouWouldBeDoneByDay.
“If we can get the nation to really go out of their way on one particular day by inviting the elderly neighbour for dinner or doing something special for someone at work on that day then it will encourage more people to do things throughout the year.”
BPH already has the support of celebrities including KT Tunstall, Adele and Tom Baxter.
If you would like to support or if you require further information you can follow @bigpinkheart or visit www.bigpinkheart.co.uk

TWIT’S SO FUNNY

New twitter comedy book supports Comic Relief

By @makingthenews
twitter correspondent

A NEW collection of comedy writing — created through Twitter — went on sale this week.
TwitterTitters, featuring exclusive new writing from Phoenix Nights co-creator Dave Spikey and a foreword by comedian Nat Coombs, was created in support of Comic Relief ahead of Red Nose Day 2009.
Dave said: “Not only is Comic Relief a great cause but it is fantastic that up-and-coming comedy writers can contribute to collections like TwitterTitters.”
Nat, whose comedy ‘Chelsey: OMG!’ is an online phenomenon, added: “TwitterTitters is a terrific project and I feel priviliged to be in a position where I can help raise a laugh for Comic Relief whilst promoting young writing talent.
“Every year Comic Relief seems to raise more and more for good causes and hopefully TwitterTitters can help push the total up.”
The project was founded by Linda Jones (@joner) and Louise Bolotin (@louisebolotin) who invited comic writers to submit their work through Twitter.
Linda — from passionatemedia.co.uk — said: “I am a massive fan of Phoenix Nights so to get Dave Spikey’s backing is a bit surreal. We are hugely grateful to both Dave and Nat and are really looking forwad to raising as much money as we can for Comic Relief.”
Louise told how the judging panel had been bowled over by the quality of work submitted.
She said: “We’ve had more than 70 entries in a variety of different formats — everything from monologues, to poems, to short stories and blog posts.
“I love a laugh and it’s heart-warming to see so much comic talent our there and people doing so much for Comic Relief. It has been great also to see Twittersphere join forces to tweet — and retweet — messages to promote the book.”

@twitchhiker .. 3 DAYS TO GO

Paul Smith set for 30-day charity mission

By @makingthenews
twitter correspondent

@twitchhiker will set off 30-day charity mission on Sunday — to see how far he will get with the twitter community as his only aid.
The freelance journalist from Newcastle — real name Paul Smith — is attempting to travel the world in just one month relying entirely on twitter users.
And it’s all for charity, with proceeds going to the same charity supported by Twestival, Charity: Water.
In an exclusive ‘twinterview’ with @journalism_live @twitchhiker revealed: “In terms of travelling, nothing’s organised. One of the rules is I can’t plan my route more than three days ahead.”
Other rules include only being able to accept travel and accommodation on twitter and only from twitter users.
If Paul is unable to move on from a location within 48 hours, the challenge is over and he will go home.
He added: “I’ll report back with a mix of blogs, videos images and of course tweets. It’s important we’re all in this together and prove twitter can make a difference. Charity: water is a brilliant charity and I hope to do my bit.”

WORLD’S FIRST ‘MARRIAGE’ ON TWITTER

@brucewagner and @k8dt say ‘I do’

by @makingthenews, twitter correspondent

@brucewagner and @k8dt made history this week — by becoming the first couple to MARRY on twitter.
The popular New York chat show host had the craziest of days on Monday when he first of all went ‘missing’ then returned to discover he had wed an Italian-based singer songwriter.
@k8dt told the all tweet journal: “When Bruce went missing I got worried so I started messaging a few tweets to find out what had happened, asking ‘does anyone know what happened to Bruce?’
“An hour later Bruce came back with the answer .. I DO with a link to what had happened. After reading the story I replied to say ‘I DO TOO!!!’
“All of a sudden  I began getting messages saying ‘sorry to have missed the wedding’.”
Married @k8dt refused to comment on rumours that she could be charged with bigamy but said: “If Bruce wasn’t gay and I wasn’t married we would have a great future.”
Bruce refused to confirm that he was now a married man. He said: “Rumours of my marriage over twitter have been exaggerated, I am only just now hearing about it. However, I am not denying that it happened … I am just saying I don’t recall it happening very well at all.”
Bruce’s boyfriend Ed was unavailable for comment.

@kylemacrae’s midlife crunch

By @makingthenews, Twitter Correspondent

@kylemacrae – founder of Scoopt.com – today launches www.themidlifecrunch .com, a site dedicated to the much scorned ‘midlife crisis’.

“Midlife doesn’t have to be a crisis,” he explained. “But it’s certainly a crunch time in your life. On one hand, it’s an excuse to go a bit daft so you might as well enjoy it.

“I’m doing my best! On the other hand, some men do go seriously off the rails and that often ends in sorrow.

“Guys who have been through the rough stuff are well placed to help others. That’s why The Midlife Crunch extends an invitation to all men ‘of a certain age’ to share their experiences, whether funny, sad or salutary.

“I’m also interested in the bigger question of whether the midlife crisis is just a soppy western affectation or a deeper global phenomenon – something that affects all men, perhaps in very different ways across different cultures.”

Coincidentally, Scoopt was closed by its new owners Getty Images earlier this week.

“Scoopt may be dead but I’m not,” said @kylemacrae. “At 45, that’s something to celebrate.”

First Edition

First Edition

In the first editon of the all tweet journal we are giving readers the chance to win a ticket to the first-ever Edinburgh Twestival

The first batch of tickets sold out within hours so this could be the last chance for Scottish twitterers to get involved in what is sure to be a legendary night.

We also reveal @weblivz ‘s new website and confirm that @wossy and @stephenfry are genuine celebs on twitter.

You can download the all tweet journal for free or get your hands on the real thing by sending a DM to @alltweetjournal

@WEBLIVZ IN CELEB HUNT

@weblivz went undercover this week — to expose people on twitter who claim to be celebrities.
The OpenID.ORG owner has built a team of sleuth tweetectives at www.valebrity.com to find out who are the real stars and then report on the interesting things that they say and do.
@weblivz explained: “The idea of valebrity is in the name — validation of celebrities!
“Last week, Mike Butcher asked the Duncan Bannatyne on Twitter to prove he was the real Duncan Bannatyne.
“I mentioned a few tweets later that it would be cool whether @wossy was expected to validate the account of every celebrity that registered and put it on his blog . . . which I coined ‘valebrity’.
“I decided it might actually BE quite useful to have such a site to do two things.
“The first is to follow who is REAL on Twitter (and in the wider web world) and the second is to follow these real celebs and highlight interesting stuff that comes up.”
